Spaghetti Bridge Building Rules:
- Materials: Bridges must be constructed from spaghetti, Elmer's glue, and/or glue from a glue gun. These materials will be provided. No other materials are allowed. Spaghetti may be altered by carving, notching, steaming, boiling, or curving but must not be painted, stained, or glued entirely along its length to another piece.
- Design Specifications: The bridge must be free-standing, spanning two level surfaces that are 35 cm apart, without using the edges of these surfaces for support. The span will include an additional 5 cm from each side, considered for seating on the table from both sides, making the total length of the bridge 45 cm.
- Decking Requirements: The bridge must feature a spaghetti decking at least 5 cm wide, without gaps exceeding 5 mm, to accommodate a block of wood (5 cm x 5 cm x 10 cm) simulating a car moving unobstructed along its length. The deck's elevation must remain within 5 cm above or below the ends of the bridge at any point.
- Size Limitations: The bridge's maximum length is 40 cm, with a maximum vertical depth of 13 cm from the highest to the lowest point. The bridge must not weigh more than 1000 g.
- Loading Platform: Include a space for a loading platform with a 1 cm to 1.5 cm diameter hole for a 3/8th inch eyebolt, which will be secured with a wing nut through an upper 40mm square of plywood. An S-hook and metal rod will hang from the eyebolt for weight loading. Bridges touching the rod for additional support, except at the eyebolt, will be disqualified.
- Competition and Load Testing: Bridges will be tested by loading them with weights until failure. Teams must clean up debris from their bridge post-failure.
- Workspace Maintenance: Teams are responsible for daily cleanup and proper storage of their bridge. Access to another team's storage without permission is prohibited.
- Safety and Conduct: Any horseplay or violation of lab safety rules will lead to team disqualification and alternative seatwork assignments.
